Real Madrid identify key weakness in current squad beyond transfer business

Real Madrid have not quite clicked in the manner some expected this season, despite adding arguably the best forward in the world in Kylian Mbappe. Los Blancos have been hit and miss this season, and against AC Milan and Barcelona, they could revive themselves to complete one of their famous comebacks.

Los Blancos have been searching for answers, and while Carlo Ancelotti’s setup, their defensive work-rate, and injuries have all been pointed to as key factors, Relevo say another factor has also been added to the list of issues. Real Madrid feel they are lacking in leadership this season.

During the summer veterans Nacho Fernandez, their former captain, Joselu Mato and Toni Kroos all left, with the latter carrying particular weight in the dressing room. In addition, Dani Carvajal is now out injured for the rest of the season, and while Luka Modric leads as he can, it is much more difficult from the bench.

Rallying cries from Fede Valverde, Antonio Rudiger’s competitiveness and Jude Bellingham’s winning mentality aside, it has been mentioned at Valdebebas that they are missing leaders on the pitch. In particular the finger of blame has been pointed towards their star signing, feeling Kylian Mbappe must take a step forward.

It has been made clear through the local press that Real Madrid’s plans in the coming seasons revolve around Kylian Mbappe, and not for example Vinicius Junior, but if he is to be the star wearing the crown, then he will need to carry them through difficult moments. So far it is much closer to being the Brazilian’s team, but on a more macro level, it is tricky to compensate for the losses of Kroos, Nacho, Carvajal and to an extent Modric.
