UEFA confirms investigation into Spain star over controversial Gibraltar chant

UEFA have confirmed an investigation into Spain star Rodri Hernandez following their Euro 2024 title celebrations.

Amid wild partying on their return to Madrid, a controversial moment emerged, with the midfielder videoed singing ‘Gibraltar is Spanish’ to thousands of fans at Cibeles Fountain in the Spanish capital.

He was joined by captain Alvaro Morata on the microphone, alongside other players, before Morata pointed out that Rodri plays in England – ‘I don’t care’ was his response.

The following day, Gibraltar’s Football Association filed a formal complaint to UEFA on the incident.

Following that, the Chief Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo issued an even stronger rebuke on social media, labelling the incident as ‘worse than disgusting’,

As the row continues to grow, UEFA have intervened, with an investigation opened up into any potential charges to be brought against Rodri.

“A UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector will be appointed to assess a potential breach of UEFA Disciplinary Regulations by Rodrigo Hernández and Álvaro Morata in the context of conduct that occurred in the presentation to the public of the 2024 UEFA European Championship title in Madrid on 15 July 2024”, as UEFA statement read.

“Further information on this matter will be made available in due course.”

There remains no indication on what punishment could be passed on to Rodri if he is sanctioned by UEFA in the coming weeks.
