Spain pair to miss UEFA Nations League opener as no appeal launched against bans

In under two weeks’ time, Spain will begin their defence of the UEFA Nations League title that they won last summer. Luis de la Fuente’s side travel to Serbia on the fifth of September, before facing Switzerland – also away- three days later.

La Roja have been in top form over the last 12-15 months, and this summer, they added the Euro 2024 title to their collection. They will fancy their chances of retaining the Nations League, although they will be without two key players for the match against Serbia.

As per MD, the Spanish Football Federation have opted not to appeal the one-match suspensions given to Alvaro Morata and Rodri Hernandez. The pair received suspensions from UEFA after their “Gibraltar is Spanish” chants during Spain’s Euro 2024-winning celebrations, after a complaint was filed by Gibraltar’s Football Association.

It was a straightforward decision not to appeal, as it turns out. Morata is to miss the matches against Serbia and Switzerland due to injury, while Rodri will be eased back into action for Spain, as he’s yet to play for Manchester City this season.
