At the end of the season, Nacho Fernandez will have the opportunity to lift the La Liga title as captain of Real Madrid, after their success was confirmed on Saturday with Barcelona’s defeat to Girona. However, it will be his only opportunity to do, as he is set to leave in the summer as a free agent.
Nacho had been offered the chance to sign a new contract, but he wishes to start a new challenge. His decision is already known by Real Madrid, although they are yet to receive official written confirmation.
Fabrizio Romano has provided an update to The Daily Briefing on Nacho’s situation. He has revealed that the 34-year-old will not stay in Spain, despite interest from a number of La Liga sides.
“Nacho is expected to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season. The plan is clear. It was already verbally communicated to Real Madrid by Nacho some weeks ago, and the club are now waiting for an official written communication from Nacho.
“He wants to go on a free transfer to try a different chapter and he already received some approaches from La Liga sides. Since last summer, he has been one of the players wanted by Inter too, but Nacho doesn’t want to play in Europe because he doesn’t want to face Real Madrid. He has too much respect for the club of his life.
“He will probably play abroad, with MLS a concrete possibility, though it’s not the only option open to him. Let’s see what he decides.”
Nacho won his 25th trophy as a Real Madrid player with the La Liga success, and he would dearly love to end his time at the club with a 26th – that being the Champions League trophy.
