One of the aspects of Julian Alvarez’s signing for Atletico Madrid is cover for the inevitable departure of Antoine Griezmann. La Arana is seen as the long-term successor for Griezmann, who may not extend his stay at the Civitas Metropolitano beyond the end of his current contract, which expires in 2026.
As it turns out, he could leave Atleti sooner. It won’t be this summer, but a move to the MLS – Griezmann’s dream destination for his final football club – could be on the cards in 2025. As per Fabrizio Romano, Los Angeles FC consider the 33-year-old to be their dream target.

Atleti could be powerless to stop Griezmann leaving in 2025, if that’s what he wants. His release clause is in the region of €10-15m, which would surely be affordable for LAFC.
The prospect of being re-united with former France teammates Hugo Lloris and Olivier Giroud would surely be enticing for Griezmann. Atletico Madrid will be hoping he does not leave, although as mentioned, they could be unable to prevent it from happening.
