The signing that Michel Sanchez inadvertently revealed during his post-match press duties following Girona’s 1-1 draw with Real Betis has been confirmed. Pau Lopez has signed on a one-year loan deal from Olympique Marseille.
The 29-year-old hails from Girona, and was at the club until the age of 12, when he left for Espanyol, where he would eventually make his breakthrough. Lopez would head to Tottenham Hotspur, Betis, Roma and then Marseille, where he was a back up originally, but became first choice during the last two seasons. He was a crucial part of their run to the Europa League semi-finals last year too.

Lopez will compete with Paulo Gazzanigga in goal for the Catalan side, although it would be a surprise if he had left to become a back-up at Girona. Lopez will have the chance to compete in the Champions League, and Gazzanigga might consider himself unfortunate if he does lose his place, having performed well last season.
