In the next few days, it will be known where Nico Williams will be playing his football next season. The 22-year-old has been deciding between joining Barcelona or staying at Athletic Club, while Paris Saint-Germain are also pushing to sign him as Kylian Mbappe’s successor.

The matter could go either way. Barcelona are said to be confident of securing his services, but given the situation that Williams faces himself in, it would be no surprise whatsoever if he were to remain in Bilbao for at least another 12 months.
Athletic are Williams’ boyhood club, and he plays alongside brother Inaki at San Mames. It’s this relationship that could mean that Barcelona miss out on a deal for this summer – that’s because Sport say that Nico promised his older brother that they’d play together in Europe for at least one season.
If this promise is fulfilled, the younger Williams brother would remain at Athletic Club – who, in turn, would seek to offer him a new contract, thus raising the price of his release clause, which currently stands at €58m. Barcelona will be desperately hoping that they are the ones to receive a positive answer from the Euro 2024 winner.
