Spain are now searching for another left-back option to be included in their Euro 2024 squad, following confirmation on Tuesday of Jose Gaya’s hamstring injury, which will see him miss a second consecutive major tournament.
Gaya would have been called upon by Luis de la Fuente had be not suffered a relapse in his quadriceps, which will end up requiring surgery. He and Alejandro Grimando were to be the picks, but now another player will be drafted instead.
According to Relevo, Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella is the favourite to benefit from Gaya’s misfortune. The former Barcelona and Getafe defender was called up for the matches against Colombia and Brazil in March when Gaya was also injured.
Girona’s Miguel Gutierrez, who has had an outstanding season, is also an option for de la Fuente, as he has been included in the 57-man pre-list that was revealed last week. For now, the matter is open, but Cucurella is favourite to receive the call from Spain.
