Today’s lunchtime kickoff in La Liga is Sevilla against Celta Vigo, a game that even as recently as 4 or 5 years ago would have been an upper mid-table clash between two teams pushing for Europe.
Now, after some chaotic seasons for both, it’s a battle between two teams getting dragged into the relegation fight.
Celta are just two points from 18th and are hoping for a boost after sacking Rafa Benitez, while Sevilla are just 4 points ahead of them. Both of these sides want to get this season out of the way and reach the summer, so they can start building towards the future, but first they have to secure their status in La Liga.
One interesting thing to look out for is whether the newly appointed Celta coach Claudio Giraldez will promote any youngsters from the club’s B team, which he’s been managing for the last two years.
It would be a risky move for a side sitting so close to the drop zone – but what does he really have to lose?
